How to Prepare for Your Gut Microbiome Test

What to know and steps to take in the 2 weeks leading up to your at-home gut microbiome test

Summary: To ensure accurate and reliable results from your Gut Microbiome Test, please review the following recommendations before collecting your sample.  If you have any questions, please reach out to us at Hello@getclarity.health.  Please note – do NOT stop taking any medication without first consulting with your prescribing provider.

1. Stop Certain Supplements & Medications (2 Weeks Before Test): To avoid skewing your microbiome data, pause the following if approved by your clinician:

  • Probiotics & Prebiotics – including powders, capsules, or drinks containing live cultures.
  • Herbal Antimicrobials – oregano oil, berberine, garlic, neem, etc.
  • Digestive Enzymes or Betaine HCl – unless prescribed for essential use.
  • Laxatives or Fiber Supplements – psyllium, inulin, Miralax, etc.
  • Antibiotics – if you’ve recently taken antibiotics, wait at least 4 weeks before testing, unless otherwise instructed.

2. Avoid Major Diet or Lifestyle Changes Prior to Your Test (1 Week Before Test):

  • Try to eat and live normally during the week before your test.
  • Avoid starting new supplements, restrictive diets, or detox programs.
  • Continue your usual sleep, stress, and activity patterns for the most accurate baseline.

3. Determining Test Day: Try to collect your sample on a day when your gut symptoms are more noticeable.  If no symptoms occur within 3 days of receiving the test, complete the test on day 3 regardless – your results will still provide ample, clinically valuable data, even if you’re symptom-free on test day.
