Digestive Enzymes: Why Can’t You Break Down Your Food?

 

You eat well. You've cut out the obvious offenders (maybe gluten, maybe dairy) and things improved a little. But a few hours after most meals, you're still bloated, still foggy, still wondering what you missed.

The diet might not be the problem. Your digestion might be. Specifically, the enzymes your body uses to break food down.

What digestive enzymes actually do

Digestive enzymes are proteins your body produces to convert food into forms it can use. Carbohydrates become simple sugars. Proteins become amino acids. Fats become fatty acids. Without that conversion, food moves through your digestive tract but doesn't get absorbed properly.

The process involves multiple organs: the stomach initiates protein breakdown, the pancreas releases most of the digestive enzymes, the small intestine handles most absorption, and the liver and gallbladder contribute bile for fat digestion. Each step depends on the one before it. When any part of that chain is off, or when enzyme output is poorly timed, food arrives in the small intestine only partially broken down. That's when symptoms start.

Why enzyme function breaks down

Most people who come to Clarity are already eating well by conventional standards: lots of vegetables, quality protein, minimal processed food. On paper, their diet looks fine. When we assess their digestion, enzyme output is low and the upstream signals that trigger enzyme release aren't firing properly.

This isn't unusual. Enzyme insufficiency can develop from chronic stress, gut inflammation, low stomach acid, pancreatic or gallbladder dysfunction, or long-term restrictive dieting. Add in pesticide exposure, water quality, and physical inactivity, and you have a lot of pressure on a system that needs precise coordination to work. The cause is rarely one thing.

The downstream effects

Poor enzyme function doesn't just cause bloating and gas. Partially digested food feeds the wrong bacteria in the gut, which compounds the imbalance. Nutrient absorption declines even when intake is adequate, leading to deficiencies that affect how your body functions at a cellular level. Over time, people start reacting to foods they used to tolerate fine, not because those foods changed, but because the underlying gut environment did.

Restrictive dieting can make this worse. Cutting food groups narrows microbial diversity, and fewer fiber sources means fewer bacterial strains. The short-term relief is real. The long-term tradeoff often isn't worth it.
